Balance your energy and eat mindfully

As a certified nutritional health coach, I know that one diet does not fit all.  We are all so different, living different lifestyles and with different needs and it is impossible to put everyone under the same hat.

Eating mindfully and balancing your energy

But there is something that everyone has in common and can consider implementing even more into their lives. It is mindful eating. I love looking into the health benefits of different methods and one of my favorites is Ayurveda. Ayurveda, or “science of life,” is an ancient healing system that supports health through balancing energies. Foods, activities, seasons, and even times throughout the day all have different energies. The Ayurveda science says that when energy is balanced, it supports health, but an imbalance of energy can lead to illness.

Ayurveda's ideas

Ayurveda's ideas on how to eat mindfully are something I think everyone can implement more into their eating habits.  The ideas support digestion and boost health.

Cook consciously

Consider the energy and intention you bring to the foods you cook.  It does not always have to be complicated or take a lot of time.  But put love into the food you make.

Eat mindfully

Take your time and avoid eating with distractions. Tune in to how you feel before, during, and after eating.

Chew food thoroughly

Proper chewing helps facilitate digestion. We should also teach our children to chew food properly and eat with calmness.

Drink room temperature or warm water

Stay hydrated between meals, and take small sips of water during meals.

Have lunch be your largest meal of the day

This is the time when we need the most energy and we should think of the food we have for lunch as our main energy source during the day.

Stop eating before you’re over-full

A helpful rule is to eat until you’re about 80% full. If we are distracted while eating for example eating in front of the TV or while working we might end up eating much more than we need only because we were not thoughtful while eating.

Avoid eating too close to bedtime

Sleep is the time for the parasympathetic nervous system, to rest and digest. If you spend all night digesting, your body won’t spend enough time resting.

Enjoy eating

Remember that pleasure is a valuable aspect of holistic nourishment.

Nourish your body with love

I hope these points above will encourage you to pay attention to your eating habits. When we start putting more love and thoughts into our food we become more conscious of the choices we make and want to nourish our bodies in the best way possible.  Eating on the go, rushing in meals, and not giving them the time they deserve are something that we should avoid. It might be tempting when life gets busy to grab something quickly or eat very fast. But is it worth it? Would you not prefer nourishing your body and mind in the best way possible for your own health and wellbeing?

It builds up deep core strength, creates sustainable and lasting change, relieves physical tension and mental stress, and gives you an overall healthier and happier body.
