5 tips that help you start working out and build your confidence

We all know that exercising is good for us and there are so many health benefits of exercising.  But at the same time, it’s hard for many to show up and begin their workout journey.  Just the thought of putting on the workout clothes, stepping on the mat, and not to mention finishing a whole workout, feels overwhelming.  If you are new to training or have been on a long break you might relate.

Here are 5 tips on how you can start building up confidence towards conquering your first workout.

Go slow

In order to succeed in your first workout, you need to work slow and securely.  Getting to know your body,  feel it move, and really go at your own pace.  Focusing on the right technique, and working towards engaging the right muscles to prevent getting injured. Listen to the body and make sure that you don’t overdo it in the beginning.

Build your mental strength

Put your focus on what you can do instead of emphasizing what you can’t.  Don’t break yourself down by counting things that you are incapable of right now, those are obstacles that you will eventually overcome.  Have a positive mindset and be proud of yourself for showing up, to have put on the workout clothes and stepped on the mat.  That is your first step. Be thankful that you have something to work towards and aim to find the joy in moving.

Make it a part of your routine

Starting a new habit such as working out isn’t easy, especially if it is not usually a part of your routine. It is all about being realistic about it, making time for it, and prioritizing it.  Instead of going all out at first, be easy on yourself and start by adding 2-3 workouts into your schedule a week. If it feels overwhelming or undoable, start with taking short classes such as Withsara Beginner classes or Mini series, which are only 10 minutes.  Starting small is okay, you will soon start to feel the benefits of those short workouts and want to do more.  You can gradually start adding in longer workouts but remember, it is not about the length of the class, it is about showing up and doing the work. Follow Withsara Weekly schedule when you feel ready and let us help you set up the week.

Celebrate your wins, big and small

To finish your first workout is a very big achievement. Don’t forget to notice your accomplishment and reward yourself. As you start working towards your goals you will start to achieve small and big wins. If your accomplishment is meaningful to you, celebrate it! You worked hard to accomplish them and they deserve attention.

Find your reason

Having a reason for what you are doing will help you get inspired to continue.  Write down your goals and go back to them every time you need to get inspired or you feel off track.  They can be short-term goals, like a weekly goal, or a more long-term goal.

When you start to feel your hard work paying off, the more consistent you will become and start believing in yourself more.  Start pushing past the excuses, the self-doubt, and negative thinking and show up for yourself.  You deserve to feel good in your body and mind and exercising is your important step in achieving that.
